Transportation
Serifos is a small island, with short distances from place to place. Its roads are mostly asphalt and can be divided in two main routes: the northeastern and the southwestern.
The biggest and most crowded villages are Livadi and Chora, which stand only 4,5 km appart. They have parking lots, but not big enough to accommodate the great traffic of August. In case you park on the side of the road, make sure that you will leave plenty of space for the unhindered passing of buses and trucks. The places where parking is not allowed are signposted, so you should better comply, although local authorities usually whistle before issuing a fine.
The public transport of the island does not cover all destinations and the timetables can be confining. During the summer the buses operate frequent routes during the day, connecting Chora with Livadi, and from time to time other villages. The current transport timetable is posted in Livadi, next to the marina and by the edge of the Windmills Square in Ano Chora, just before the downhill road to Kato Chora. The same spots is also where the buses stop - they stop, of course, at various points of the route, while you can get your ticket either from the bus driver or from his assistant.
If you don’t visit Serifos with your own vehicle, it is advisable that you use a taxi or rent a car/bike, at least for a day, so that you do not miss any of the magnificent locations or beaches of the island. In order to rent a car, rent a bike or another form of transportation in the island of Serifos, check our contact lists below.
Alternatively, you can walk or cycle towards many of the nearby villages, as well as through beautiful hiking trails.
The distance from Livadi to Chora can be covered on foot, too, if you follow the paved path (Signage “A”), which passes by well-maintained churches, traditional Cycladic homes, and the beautiful building of the Folklore Museum, while it continues till Ano Chora and the top of the Castle of Serifos.
Quite close to Livadi you will find the beaches of Avlomonas, Livadakia and Karavi, which you can visit on foot, while dozens of other amazing beaches await for you a few kilometers away.
