Churches and Monasteries

The deep religious feeling of the orthodox Hellenism is reflected in the Serifian landscape, with the Monastery of Taxiarches and more than a hundred churches and chapels.

Whitewashed or colored temples, with simple and austere design, some built within the island’s settlements and others spread in remote points, they all witness the intense Christian faith throughout the centuries.

Many of these churches open their gates and yards every year in order to celebrate the homonymous Saint (Agios, /’αyios/) with the famous folklore festivals of Serifos, while the Christmas and Easter celebrations fill the visitor with feelings of devoutness.
